Seven Signs It's Time (for Retirement Living)

Seeing what we want to see is more than human nature.  It’s also a fact proven by researchers at Cornell University (2006).  So it shouldn’t surprise us when we don’t see the signs that say our aging parents need additional help to stay healthy and safe.

“Experience tells me there are at least two reasons adult children find it hard to see things as they really are,” says Julia Spigarelli, Director of Independent Living at The Villas at Sunny Acres. “The first is that they want so much for their parents to maintain their independence. They know how much Mom or Dad prizes that freedom, and they don’t want to be the ones to take it away. The second is that a parent’s leaving the family home can be very emotional in terms of one’s own aging process. Wanting to keep things as they have been is a very strong pull.”

But at some point, sentiment must give way to safety.

“For the families we serve,” she continues, “it usually comes down to moment of clarity that can’t be denied. Something triggers the thought process that says a more supportive living environment, such as independent senior living or assisted living, is essential for Mom’s or Dad’s wellbeing. For the fortunate ones, that moment arrives before the parent’s physical decline results in an injury.”
So, what are the signs adult children should keep in mind as a parent ages?

Julia offers seven:
1. Is she taking her medications as prescribed?
2. Is he saying he’s eating but you see weight loss or find spoiled food?
3. Is she falling or seeming less stable when she walks?
4. Is he wearing the same clothes repeatedly or not grooming as usual?
5. Is she hearing strange noises at night or is she afraid to be alone?
6. Is he still engaged with friends and interests, or is he becoming isolated?
7. Are her finances or home becoming disordered?

“Seeing the true situation with fresh eyes can help you make measured decisions that actually help maintain a loved one’s independence by adding the level of care needed,” Julia summarizes. “And to do so before there’s a crisis makes all the difference.”
